Astribot is the product brand of Stardust Intelligence (星尘智能), a Shenzhen embodied-AI company founded on December 5, 2022 by Lai Jie — a robotics veteran who led Baidu's Xiaodu robot team and was among the founding cohort at Tencent's Robotics X lab before leaving with a small core team to start his own company. The name comes from the Latin ad astra per aspera — "through hardship to the stars."

Its flagship, the Astribot S1, is not a walking biped. It is a full-size dual-arm manipulation platform on an omnidirectional wheeled base — a deliberate trade: skip balance, pour everything into arm speed and dexterity. The actuation is tendon-driven (cable/rope-driven): motors sit at the rear and pull on joint "tendons," giving compliant motion that rigid gear-stack designs struggle to replicate. Astribot has publicly quoted end-effector speeds above 10 m/s and 5 kg payload per arm at full reach.

The S1 debuted at the 2024 World Robot Conference in Beijing and went viral for fast household-chore demonstrations — folding, pouring, wiping — that looked genuinely impressive rather than teleoperated slop. Under the hood, Astribot promotes a "Design for AI" architecture that couples manipulation hardware with embodied-intelligence training, VR teleoperation for data collection, and open simulation models (URDF, MuJoCo, Isaac Sim).

Leadership is technically deep. CEO Lai Jie spent roughly 16 years in robotics R&D before founding Astribot, including leading Baidu's Xiaodu robot and serving in Tencent Robotics X from its 2018 launch.
