Why joint maintenance for robots matters
Consumer robots have tens of mechanical joints (wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, fingers, and so on) that move 100s of thousands of times in the course of typical household operation. These mechanical surfaces are subject to accumulating dust and dirt, as well as microscopic damage, even with state-of-the-art actuator architectures.
Routine owner-side maintenance deals with areas that are preventable, or that can be caught early. While it doesn’t replace manufacturers scheduled service intervals, it certainly helps you maximize the interval between those services and catch trouble before it becomes a costly disaster.
The monthly 10-minute routine
Every month, take 10 minutes to do some joint maintenance. Turn the robot off properly (don’t pull the plug!) and gently wipe away any visible dirt on joints with a clean, dry, microfiber cloth. Check out the parts of the robot that do a lot of moving (like shoulders, hips, and wrists) and anywhere you can see where one surface meets another.
Perform a visual inspection of each critical assembly and examine the joints and connections for dust, obvious physical damage or anything out of place such as discoloration, cracked cable jacketing, or warped surfaces. In the majority of cases, you should observe nothing abnormal; this is exactly what a monthly preventive maintenance inspection is all about, detecting early warning signs before they develop into a full-on service call.

Dust is the biggest preventable issue
The most frequent avoidable reason for premature wear in consumer humanoids is grit accumulating near joint surfaces. Dust and other household particles infiltrate the small spaces between moving surfaces, effectively functioning as sandpaper across thousands of cycles.
Monthly wipe-down catches most of it. For households with significant pet hair, regular construction dust, or carpeted floors, a slightly more frequent schedule (every 2, 3 weeks) may be warranted. The cloth should always be dry or only very lightly damp, never wet, and never solvent-based unless explicitly endorsed by the manufacturer.
What you should never do yourself
There are three areas that are strictly for technicians and should not be tackled by owners. The first is opening the chassis; those panels and seals aren’t just for looks, they’re designed for safety, calibration, and warranty purposes. The second is lubricating the joints. You need to know the right lubricant, the right amount, and the right spot, and if you get any of those wrong, you’ll end up with premature failure.
Finally, any kind of internal repair, actuator replacement, cable repair, or sensor recalibration, all require special equipment, training, and parts not offered to owners. Trying these often nullifies warranty coverage and can actually make the original issue worse.
Watching the diagnostic log for joint signals
In 2026, nearly all consumer robots will be tracking joint status every day; any unusual wear, friction, or temperature fluctuations in a robot’s log may prompt warnings. Just spend 2 minutes a month specifically reviewing this warning section in the diagnostic log, and then be sure to pay attention to any notes about joints.
Generally, a one-off warning you’ve never seen again will be a non-event. However, if you’re seeing a warning about the same joint repeatedly throughout the weeks ahead, it’s best to engage manufacturer support before that warning becomes an error, and the error becomes a failure.
When to call for professional service
Schedule a visit with a professional service technician once the maintenance interval that was specified by the manufacturer, typically annual service for higher use platforms, and every 18, 24 months for lower use platforms. Keep your regular appointment even when you believe the robot is in good operating condition. The value of preventive service is to address problems that are unseen by users.
If you hear a joint making a sound it didn’t before outside scheduled service, see multiple weeks of joint warnings in the diagnostic log, or a change in the character of the robot’s movement (less smooth, slower, different sounding), that means “call for service.”
