So many of these consumer-oriented humanoids are launching it is starting to look like a wild west. But whereas the ones from the big industrial robot manufacturers come in at hundreds of pounds of heavy metal with arm motors the size of washing machines to lug around engine blocks in car factories, 1X’s Neo is a lightweight, whisper quiet companion. Quick verdict

For apartment dwelling or quiet, multi-generational households, the 1X Neo is the most approachable and user-friendly option. 1X may have given up industrial lifting strength, all-weather outdoor mobility, and ready out-of-the-box autonomy, but they’ve earned back a near-quiet operation, a compact footprint suitable for smaller homes, and a focus on home privacy with physical, hardware-based, non-hackable kill switches. If you're looking for a robot that can safely stack a pile of clean towels or load your dishwasher, and won't startle your toddlers or nervous cat (or turn your home into the set of a Michael Bay action movie), the Neo is a brilliant option at the moment. But if you're looking for a robotic arm to load up a snowplow or lift a couch, or one that can do its own programming without being taught in a controlled environment by remote human workers, it's going to fall short of that in its present design.

Unboxing & setup

Clearly 1X modeled Neo on high-end consumer electronics, not on industrial automation technology. The robot arrives standing vertically inside a sturdy flight-style cardboard box with handles. Since its total weight of 66 pounds (30 kg) is well within the lifting limits of an adult human, there is no need for expensive ceiling hoists, heavy-gantry lifting platforms, or even two-person teams to unbox it.
Now standing up, all of the setup is done through the 1X iOS or Android mobile app: you walk up to Neo and bring your phone close to its chest, pair the robot securely with the 1X phone over Bluetooth 5.3, get the robot set up with your Wi-Fi 6 or 5G network and tell the robot to start walking, and it will walk conservatively through your space while mapping all the boundaries, furniture, and obstacles with its dual stereo fisheye cameras and local spatial neural nets to generate an incredibly precise 3D map of your space without the need for a complicated programming and terminal input and manual joint calibration process.

Day-to-day dynamics

Living with Neo is quite a natural experience, thanks to its intentionally human scale size (168 cm / 5’6″ tall). It doesn’t hover over your family gathered on the sofa, and it doesn’t feel like a robot warehouse tool taking over your personal space.
The thing you notice the most every day is its physical body language: when Neo passes by a family member in a hallway, it doesn’t just stop (as if it were a warehouse robot cart). It uses its internal Redwood AI vision-language-action model to interpret how human body positions are changing, it tilts its shoulders in response, it sidesteps with an arm, and it moves its soft and expressive ears to communicate, “I’m paying attention”, “I’m ready”, and “I’m on it.” It acts like a non-obtrusive domestic assistant, and not like an inanimate robot.

Charging rhythm

Managing a robot like Neo’s battery charge requires a small amount of structural scheduling in advance, but from then it is completely autonomous. The lithium-ion cells built into Neo (842 Wh) can last for around 4 hours of active chore work (with an active manipulation loop). The moment its battery drops to 15%, Neo halts its current tasks and heads home to its home base to recharge.
An insanely aggressive fast charging mode consumes a lot of power, providing 1 hour of operation for every 6 minutes of docking. You might not get 8 hours of spontaneous vacuuming, but it can seamlessly split its daily workload into highly productive 4-hour bursts with some quick breaks in between.

Friction points

It’s clear that daily ownership of such a seamlessly integrated device will be plagued by certain hardware and software shortcomings, that the first-generation consumers will have to come to terms with:
• Single-Arm Lifting Ceiling: Neo’s 18-pound arm payload is an immutable limitation because of the low-inertia tendon drive. You can’t pick up that heavy cast-iron skillet that has been left on your kitchen counter with food still stuck on the bottom, and neither can you move that box of heavy mechanical tools the mailman just delivered. Trying to move it, Neo’s AI safety monitor will tell you out loud that this object is too heavy to move because it may exceed the safe joint limits.
• Nylon Knit Suit Care: Since Neo goes fully clothed with an encasing nylon knit suit designed to be “pinch proof” and safe to be around kids and furniture, the suit actually gets dirty in real-world settings and picks up dirt and stains just like regular clothing. About every couple weeks, you have to unzip the nylon suit off of the robot and put it in your regular home washing machine. 1X says the nylon suit is machine washable, but removing that fabric suit from 28 degrees of freedom and then re-dressing the suit on to the suit itself, is a task that may take some users time away from other daily activities.

Neo gets an exceptional score for fine-motor dexterity thanks to its 22-DoF (degrees of freedom) hands, the highest in the category, allowing the arm to easily pick up small items like keys or coins, as well as the delicate stem of a wine glass. While it has the highest rating in fine-dexterity, it scores low on Capability (its overall score) because it can’t carry anything over 18 lbs. and it can’t travel over rough terrain or go anywhere outside of flat indoor flooring.

Through the use of tendon drives with low inertia, rather than mass-heavy planetary gearboxes, 1X has created a platform with minimal mechanical fatigue. The lifetime of the tendon is nominal, at 2,000,000 cycles per replacement. Over months of consumer use data tracking, Neo rarely experiences hardware failure via actuator burnout or structural jam of joints, which are common in high-stress, high-pressure industrial platforms.

It’s also a massive outlier when it comes to the way that cloud telemetry was used. All of 1X NEO’s main navigation systems, obstacle avoidance, and basic language models run entirely local on an NVIDIA Jetson Thor based chip that is called the 1X NEO Cortex. Most importantly, 1X has integrated a substantial physical, hard-wired toggle switch in the side panel. Flipping the switch severs the connection of the four beamforming microphones and dual stereo cameras directly at their source: physical, power trace lines. There's no remote cloud upgrade, no software hijack, no firmware malfunction that will ever undo that action. The reason the rating doesn't hit a clean 10 is for access to more advanced, highly individualized household tasks, one must rely on 1X's Expert Mode remote-human teleoperation layer; in other words, a distant human driver will momentarily view your private living space through a secure stream to train it for a fresh, new set of abilities.

Buying a sophisticated humanoid robot is less like purchasing a piece of consumer electronics and more like buying into a software ecosystem, a parts pipeline, and a service company with responsibilities for training cloud-based infrastructure.

The company started out in 2014, originally named Halodi Robotics. It was established in Moss, Norway by Bernt Øivind Børnich, a roboticist. Over the next 10 years, it honed safe, compliant actuator hardware and whole-body control software specifically for industrial and medical applications. Its first wheel-based robot, Eve, has been sold to commercial clients in pilot security and logistics applications since 2022. Is Neo genuinely safe to leave unattended around toddlers or small infants?
Generally yes, though at least initially. The machine isn’t built from traditional industrial humanoids with high-weight, high stiffness metal arms that can crush you in the event of a software glitch. Instead, Neo is constructed around low-inertia, compliant tendon drives as well as an impact-absorbing 3D-lattice, soft, polymer body. Its arm could accidentally hit a little child in mid-movement but will back away within a split-second mechanically to external pressure; its HIC safety score will never exceed 250. There are no exposed mechanical pinch points at all. And even so, we highly recommend that you supervise it over the course of the first month so it can fully get to know the main arteries in your house.
What happens if my internet goes down completely?
Can Neo work completely on it’s own? This is only for basic baseline routines. When it comes to physical spatial navigation, real-time obstacle avoidance, or even just the execution of simple, pre-programmed household tasks, that is all being done right here on Neo’s locally-based NVIDIA Jetson Thor architecture. No connection is required. Neo would still be able to carry out its programmed morning sweep if your home Wi-Fi network goes offline. Or, if your internet drops mid-vacuum, it will make it all the way back to its base, safely. But if you want to converse with Neo or ask it to analyze the contents of your fridge and formulate an original dish for dinner, you’ll be in for a wait. That is, if you want Neo to do the thinking, rather than the human Expert Mode tutor.
How does the Expert Mode work on the drone remote?
Can the remote pilot see all the rooms of my house? An Expert Mode, meanwhile, is a scheduled mode that's supposed to help you toward autonomy. If you ask Neo to complete a task that's out of the scope for its own Redwood AI model (such as operating an atypical, specialized brand of espresso machine), the app can be used to arrange a remote, live-training session with a certified 1X operator. When the window opens, your robot can be accessed by a remote pilot over an encrypted VR headset connection, who then manually controls Neo’s arms and hands to guide it through the operation. The remote pilot will see the real-time video stream from Neo’s wide angle cameras to facilitate the operation. However, to ensure your family’s privacy, 1X’s software automatically applies local real-world privacy masks that cover faces, personal photo frames and other sensitive documents like paper checks. This happens before the video stream leaves your router. Then when the remote pilot has performed the operation a few times, the Neo’s onboard neural net automatically learns the physical dimensions of the process, and Neo will then execute the operation completely independently on its own going forward.
What if one of the tendons were to break, or if a sensor were to go bad, do I have to send the whole 66 pound robot back to 1X?
No. Neo has a highly modular and serviceable design, so when a particular joint actuator or tendon string inside Neo ages or gets damaged by repetitive stress across its 2,000,000-cycle cycle lifespan, 1X's remote support team will be made aware by your telemetry logs, which can be opted in. For 1X Care subscription plans, the company sends a new, modular part, like an entire forearm or a lower leg, to your house. Then you can replace it yourself. Turn the machine off, take off its nylon washing-machine friendly outer skin, detach a handful of quick-releasing structural pins and electrical connections, snap the modular robot limb back in, and turn it on. It'll automatically run its own brief self-calibration process (just 60 seconds of testing) and then get back to work.
VERDICT

Bottom line

Let's be clear: the 1X Neo is in no way the toughest, nimblest, or biggest humanoid robot in the world in 2026. If the only criteria that matter are how much something can pick up, how well it can withstand the elements, or how physically dominant it is when compared to other models, then Digit and Figure are infinitely better pieces of hardware. Still, there’s really no yardstick for domestic success that’s more raw industrial output. Houses are quiet, informal spaces filled with very personal activities. And so in targeting low-noise tendon drives, a non-threatening soft body, apartment-friendly dimensions, and physical privacy controls that can’t be remotely hacked, 1X has produced the first consumer humanoid that actually feels like a natural fit for a home instead of a robotic factory unit that’s just broken into your space. If you’re willing to help the robot learn through the hybrid teleoperation stage of development, I think 1X Neo is one of the best early-consumer humanoid robots to buy.
