The company started out in 2014, originally named Halodi Robotics. It was established in Moss, Norway by Bernt Øivind Børnich, a roboticist. In 2022, 1X Technologies rebranded itself with the final engineering goal being the private consumer home. It was OpenAI’s decision to back 1X through its OpenAI Startup Fund in 1X’s Series A round that supercharged this new mission.

During 2026, the period when Neo will be massively produced and shipped, 1X opened their global headquarters in Palo Alto, California while simultaneously increasing production capabilities at the company’s Hayward, California and Moss, Norway manufacturing hubs. This has enabled the company to create a regional supply chain to support North America and Europe and to ensure customer-facing support agents and technical repair depots, making 1X one of the most robustly structured and financially sound companies in the highly uncertain and volatile robotics industry.
