Quick verdict

The Tesla Optimus Gen 3 is one of the most ambitious mass-market humanoid robots on any public roadmap today. Targeted for a $20,000 to $25,000 price point, it will be manufactured in quantities that would dwarf the current market, thanks to Tesla’s internally developed chips, motors, and batteries. It features improved dexterity at 22 DoF per hand and is not burdened by the legacy of the early versions, which had to use hydraulics. It is also one of the few humanoids with explicit commercial intent, as opposed to factory-based demos.If buying into the most well-resourced humanoid project is your priority, and you’d like the most credible shot at getting this technology for the best possible price, Optimus Gen 3 is worth following. The best way to judge a home humanoid isn’t by its specs sheet, but through the effects it has on the fabric of your life, as you interact with it over time. And this is how it felt to live with the Tesla Optimus Gen 3 over months of ownership.

Unboxing & setup

Delivery will take place using Tesla’s own delivery system, which is what they use for cars rather than standard package delivery. Optimus will have its first setup session, connect to the Tesla app, and begin mapping a user’s home using the same experience we currently use for vehicle and energy products. In that first session, Optimus uses its vision system to build an internal spatial map, learn where all the permanent obstacles are, and learn where your charging dock is. It will learn all of your major rooms and areas as it maps your home. This is to mirror the delivery process that Tesla currently does for vehicles, which should be familiar and intuitive to customers and very accessible for first-time Tesla vehicle owners.

Day-to-day dynamics

Tesla Optimus’s ownership experience feels more a function of the software cadence of Tesla than it does the robot’s physical body. In practical reality, we’ve already seen the platform become more capable between firmware updates, something much more familiar to Tesla car owners, less so to appliance owners. For daily use, Optimus is polite, walks slowly, uses voice control that most people in the home can acclimate to in a week, and seamlessly uses Tesla’s mobile phone and energy products in the house. That said, Optimus is far more of a ramp-up to use for people unfamiliar with the Tesla ecosystem than other competing stand-alone platforms.

Charging rhythm

The charging approach for Optimus Gen 3 is similar to what many Tesla owners already know: it charges while you sleep and automatically comes home when the battery level gets too low. The robot is able to do about 4-5 hours of work throughout the day, and it will go back and forth between work and charging periods throughout the day. If you are already using Tesla solar or Powerwall at home, you can use them to easily schedule charging during off-peak hours. If you are thinking about adding Optimus to a daily chore schedule, you should realistically plan for two work periods with charging breaks in between, instead of working the whole day with just one charging break in between.

Friction points

While the Gen 3 version is a massive upgrade over earlier Optimus iterations, there are a few things that you’ll come across in your daily life with the bot that you should be prepared for before buying one. First, a portion of the bot’s capabilities aren’t fully functional, with some software features that were shown to the public only unlocked via future OTA updates; if you’re buying the Optimus to have every capability that was publicly demonstrated on day one, be warned that you may be unhappy if you’re not prepared for a learning curve with your new assistant. Second, Tesla’s direct model means that service coverage will not be consistent, so if you live far from the nearest Tesla Service Centre, make sure that you’re comfortable with the service coverage before committing to a purchase. Finally, Tesla’s pricing has historically gone up, so make sure that you look at the price history on their website before getting one and committing to Tesla’s $20,000-$25,000 pricing target.

Purchasing a Tesla Optimus means not just acquiring hardware but also participating in one of the world’s most aggressively vertical robotics efforts and its accompanying potential and risks.

Tesla, Inc. was established in California in 2003, and has spent over two decades investing in and building vertically integration in electric vehicles, energy storage, solar, and AI compute. The Optimus humanoid project was first announced publicly in 2021, and the original Tesla Bot (as they then called the platform) has been demonstrated first as a concept prototype that was later replaced by a series of evolving versions, each a significant generational improvement over the preceding one. The unusual aspect of this bet is the range of in-house capabilities from which to pull for the development of the project. Specifically, the in-house capability stack includes the battery cells, motor designs, AI training infrastructure (Dojo), and manufacturing knowhow that are currently being developed and produced for Tesla’s core business. Tesla’s explicit stated long-term intention is for Optimus production capacity to be many multiples larger than Tesla vehicles production capacity. To that end, new Optimus-specific production lines have reportedly already been installed at the Fremont and Gigafactory Texas (GigaTexas) facilities.
