With Astra, we get to take the industrial engineering pedigree of Apptronik’s work in the industrial sector and apply it to something closer to the consumer space, an area that was created for the sole purpose of bringing that Apollo-level engineering home.
Apptronik, which was established in 2016 as a spin-out of The University of Texas Human Centered Robotics Lab, has gained its industrial credentials through its Apollo humanoid initiative as well as through deployments at Mercedes-Benz, GXO Logistics and other enterprise customers. Astra was Apptronik’s attempt at branching out to non-industrial use cases, using the company’s actuator design and engineering experience to build a more lightly-loaded, residentially-friendly product. The Astra program was launched publicly in 2025 with an explicit mission to carry Apptronik’s industrial background into consumer-facing and light commercial deployments, and it appears to be shipping early orders through Apptronik’s established channels, as Astra’s deployments engineering is built upon a slightly lighter version of the Apollo system for consumer-facing buyers. Apptronik’s Austin-based factory is capable of producing both Astra and Apollo, with shared manufacturing components helping it to scale at a speed no pure-consumer humanoid company can.
