Fauna Robotics was founded in 2024 in New York City by Rob Cochran (CEO, formerly CTRL-Labs/Meta) and Josh Merel (CTO). The team draws from Meta Reality Labs, Google DeepMind, Amazon, and other NYC hardware alumni with a single thesis: humanoid robots belong in human spaces — schools, retail, entertainment, and eventually homes — and must be safe, lightweight, and emotionally approachable to earn trust.
Sprout is Fauna's platform: a bipedal humanoid roughly 3 feet 6 inches tall (42 inches) and 50 pounds, designed for shared environments with adults, children, and pets. Launched January 27, 2026 as a Creator Edition developer platform, Sprout ships from US manufacturing in New York. Official pricing is $50,000; robixone estimates ~$40,000 on its Sprout review (HOSI 5.5). Sprout can dance, grasp lightweight objects, navigate office layouts autonomously, and be teleoperated via controller, phone app, or VR headset — but it is a developer kit, not a finished home appliance.
Early customers before the acquisition included Disney and Boston Dynamics (Hyundai), validating entertainment and robotics-sector interest. Fauna emphasized safety-first design, tight US engineering loops, and modular AI — positioning Sprout against heavy industrial humanoids ill-suited to public spaces. Cochran cited WALL-E, Baymax, and Rosie the Robot as design inspiration rather than dystopian sci-fi.
On March 24, 2026, Amazon confirmed it acquired Fauna Robotics. Terms were undisclosed; roughly 50 employees joined Amazon in New York. Fauna stated it will continue operating as "Fauna Robotics, an Amazon company," selling Sprout Creator Edition robots and supporting existing customers. The deal marks Amazon's entry into the humanoid market alongside its broader robotics investments (including the Rivr delivery-robot acquisition days earlier).
For a robixone US buyer: Fauna is the most home-adjacent American humanoid brand on the market — but Sprout remains a developer platform requiring technical skill, not a plug-and-play household robot. UK buyers should expect no availability. Post-acquisition integration with Alexa/AWS is plausible but unproven for residential use as of mid-2026.
