What this URL owns — and what it does not
Home maintenance here means the house, not the robot. Changing a filter, carrying tools, a supervised furniture assembly, a walk-around to see what is dripping or dark. Servicing the robot’s own joints, actuators and dust in the drivetrain is a different job — that is the joint maintenance guide. Mixing those queries is how a buyer looking for “how to oil the hip” lands on a page about light bulbs, and both URLs lose.
Two other siblings steal this query if we are sloppy. Everyday housework — tidy, vacuum, dishwasher — is the household chores guide. Outdoor watering and weeding is gardening with humanoids. This page is indoor upkeep: the small, repetitive, non-licensed work a household actually wants a machine to help with, and the licensed work it must never be asked to do.
What a humanoid can actually do in 2026
Carry and stage. Tools from the garage to the room, a filter box from the cupboard, a step-stool you will stand on — not the robot. This is fetch with a maintenance label, and it is the highest-reliability slice. A person still does the part that can start a fire or a flood.
Simple swap-outs at reachable height. HVAC return filters, a smoke-detector battery on a hallway ceiling the robot can actually reach without a ladder, a bulb in a table lamp — not a fixture over the stairs. “Reachable” is the whole sentence. Most consumer humanoids do not have a safe, rated working height for overhead electrical work, and none of them should be on a ladder.
Look and report. A mapped walk to see whether a basement corner is wet, a window was left open, a breaker is tripped (looking at the panel is not resetting it). That overlaps the home security guide on “go and look”; here the trigger is maintenance, not an alarm. Same skill, different job.
Supervised assembly. A low table, a shelf, furniture that sits on the floor with screws you can see. The person still reads the instructions, still holds the piece that will fall, still decides the screw is tight enough. The robot can drive screws on a flat, stable workpiece. That is not “repairs.”
A first week that actually sticks looks like this: map the furnace closet and the filter cupboard, then one routine — fetch the filter box and stand it next to the return. Do that for two weeks before you add a lamp bulb, a detector battery in reach, or a flat-pack shelf. The useful machine is the one still fetching in month six, not the one that tried to become a contractor on Saturday and is now in the garage.
What it must never be asked to do
Electrical, plumbing, gas. No consumer manufacturer supports a humanoid on household wiring, a live outlet, a supply line, or an appliance gas connection. A demo of a robot at an open outlet is marketing, not a rated task. If the job needs a license in your state, it needs a human with that license.
Ladders, roofs, attics, the top of the stairs with a fixture in one hand. Balance plus height plus a tool is how you get a $20,000 machine on the floor and a hole in the ceiling. Configure no-go zones on stairs you do not want it on, and do not “just this once” send it up a stepladder.
Replace a handyman. A handyman diagnoses, improvises, and stops before making it worse. A 2026 humanoid follows a narrow routine. The failure mode is not a crooked shelf — it is a stripped valve or a live wire. Keep the human for anything you would not let a careful teenager do unsupervised.

The robots roundups list that a household cannot use
Search “humanoid home repair” and you will meet Atlas at $150,000 and platforms in the $50,000–$60,000 band sold to labs and commercial operators. They are real machines. They are not a household purchase in 2026, they are not insured like a consumer robot, and they do not come with a “change my bathroom faucet” skill. They belong here as context. They do not belong on a family shortlist.
Apollo at $50,000, AgiBot-class platforms around $60,000, and similar industrial names show up on the same roundups because they can hold a tool in a factory cell. That is a different buyer, a different support contract, and a different insurance conversation. If the pricing page says “contact sales,” it is not this guide’s shortlist. The home-maintenance hub used to surface those machines as picks. It no longer does.
Which robots are worth considering
Capability and reliability dominate. Privacy still matters — a maintenance robot has cameras in utility rooms — but a presence-first machine that cannot carry a filter box is the wrong hardware. The consumer cluster that can actually help sits at $16,000–$20,000.

Figure 03 is the default for this job. Capability 9.4 and reliability 9.1 are the highest in the consumer tier, which is what you want when the object in the hand is a tool or a filter, not a cushion. Apartment compatibility 9.5 means it is not only a big-house machine.
Tesla Optimus Gen 3 is the other $20,000 capable option (capability 9.0). Reliability 8.2 is the trade if the robot will be near shelves and corners. 1X Neo is the pick when the home is small or the same robot has to be tolerable as a companion between jobs — apartment 9.6, slightly less capability. Unitree G1 at $16,000 is the value door: enough capability (8.0) to carry and stage, not enough reliability (7.6) to be the default next to anything that can scratch a floor or a knuckle.

What it costs against a handyman
A $20,000 robot is about $32,300 over five years, or $538 a month. The model is in the five-year cost breakdown; financing only changes when the cash leaves. A handyman visit in most US metros is $80–$150 an hour, often with a minimum. $538 is roughly four to six of those hours — and the handyman will do the licensed work the robot cannot touch.
So the arithmetic that works is not “fire the handyman.” It is “stop paying a call-out for carrying a filter upstairs and looking at the basement corner.” Keep the human for electrical, plumbing, and anything at height. A robot that saves two $120 visits a month on fetch-and-look is doing its job. A robot that you bought so you would never call an electrician is a $32,300 way to still call an electrician, plus a damaged panel. Insurance is the conversation to have before a screwdriver is near a wall — accidental damage on a maintenance robot is not theoretical.
How to set it up so it is still useful in month six
Map the utility routes: furnace closet, filter cupboard, garage tool wall, the room where furniture gets assembled. Robot-proof cables, wet floors, and the cat’s bowl on those paths. Set no-go on stairs, the electrical panel interior, and anywhere a ladder would be the next step. Read the mapping guide before the first “go get the filter” routine.
Start with one job for two weeks: fetch the HVAC filter box and stand it next to the return. Not “maintain the house.” Adding power tools, overhead work, or unsupervised assembly on day one is how you get a stripped screw and a robot that is unplugged by Saturday.
Stay in the room. Maintenance is not empty-home work in 2026. A stuck robot with a driver in a cabinet door is a damaged door, not a cute fail video. If you would not leave a teenager alone with a live driver next to a painted cabinet, do not leave the robot. The supervision is the safety system; the software is not.
Keep a written list of unsupported tasks on the fridge: no ladders, no panel interior, no water supply, no gas. Household guests and kids will otherwise invent jobs. The same list belongs in the robot’s routine notes so a voice command cannot override a no-go zone. If the manufacturer cannot lock those zones, this is the wrong machine for a house with stairs or a basement workshop.
Who this is actually for
A household that wants a supervised helper for carry, reachable swap-outs, look-and-report, and floor-level assembly — and that will still call a human for licensed work and height. Not someone hoping to skip the electrician. Not someone whose actual pain is housework (chores) or the robot’s own service (joint maintenance). Not someone shopping Atlas because a roundup put it under “home repairs.” If the house is a rental with a super who already handles filters and small fixes, the robot is paying $538 a month to duplicate a person you already have.
